Some time ago, DaffyCat (Sharon) had a blog devoted to embroidered peacocks, and she had it open to anyone to join, and post photos of their own embroidered peacocks. Due to lack of interest over the past year, she closed it down, and I thought I would take up the slack and open this one up in a similar way. I'm not going to make it open to everyone to post their own thing though (too much risk of spam and other nasties), so what I suggest is that if you are working on a peacock embroidery and would like to show it here so others can admire it, simply email me a picture of it and a description, and I'll transfer it on to this blog.
If you have anything else in the nature of peacocks (like the china, transfers, cards, etc. that I have posted here), send that along to me as well.

A friend in the USA sent me some fabrics I needed for a project, and knowing my love of peacocks, she included some extras in her parcel!
A fabulous machine embroidered peacock which looks like it was part of a larger design of some sort. Beautiful!

New cross stitch kit - I don't know if I'll ever do this, as TW's stunning designs are incredibly complex, as well as being on very small Aida ct. fabric! It would take me years, but then again, you don't know until you try, do you?

Like most bloggers, I love receiving comments on my blogs, and always try to respond to them by posting a comment on your blogs. But lately it has become increasingly difficult to access some blogs, due to the enormous amount of graphics they use. The reason my blog headings are so plain is not just because I'm not clever enough to do fancy stuff on my computer. I also leave them as simple as possible because the downloading process is a lot faster for readers as well as me!

So, my apologies to those of you who post comments here but haven't had a response. If I get on to Ken's laptop (once in a blue moon), I can usually access most of my favourite blogs, and will leave a comment. But if I don't, it just means your blog is too complex for my ancient PC (11 years old) and OS (ME, cc 2000)!
I have another computer on order, which is about 5 years old and uses the XP Op.System. Yeah, I know it's old too, but not as old as mine, and it will only cost me $290 for the modem, LCD screen, keyboard and mouse, so hopefully it will do me for another couple of years, because I just cannot afford to buy a brand new one!

I already have another cloth embroidered with exactly the same design, but in different colours. Sadly, this one has quite a bit of damage around the edges, so I may cut it up and use it for a patchwork project.

This was sent to me along with a fabric postcard, from Sheila in Scotland. The postcard was for a birthday postcard swap we are in, and she sent the little peacock as an extra gift because she knows I love peacocks. Isn't it sweet!

Well here it is, finally finished with backing and binding - thanks to a dear friend who is much better than me at those finishing touches! She had some orange scraps which looked much better than the fabric I was going to use. You can click on the image for a close up view.
I had such fun doing this. People kept giving me stuff to put on it. There are two ear-rings found at op shops: one on the top left hand corner, attached to the peacock feather fabric, and the other on the purple patch near the top. A friend gave me the tiny peacock charm in the bottom left hand corner, which is attached to a bed of ribbony stuff that someone else gave me because the colours reminded her of my block. The turquoise tatting under the buttons was given to me by a member of our Guild, and the buttons and other bling have been collected along the way.

One day I'll do another one of these blocks, as I have some more Peacock fabric in a different pattern and colourway. I still have lots of bling left over that I can use!

I've already posted this on my other blog, but it really belongs here!
I borrowed a book from the library, called "Miniature Embroidery for the Victorian Dolls' House". It has the cutest tiny designs in embroidery, cross stitch and patchwork, and among them was this little peacock which was supposed to be for a folding or pole screen in a dolls house. The design is from a panel in the collection of the Rochester Museum. I've never had a dolls house, and am not likely to have one in the foreseeable future, but I just had to stitch this peacock before returning the book!

I started this last year when I got hooked onto crazy patchwork, but I had so many other things to do that it didn't get finished. But this year is to be my year of finishing UFOs, and this block was high on the list of priorities. All I have to do is a tad more embellishing, and the border and backing, and it's done.

The proverb "One good turn deserves another" certainly proves itself over and over again for me with my cyberspace friends. I sent some unworked vintage linen pieces over to Lakshmi in India, because those stamped linens are very hard to find over there. She does the most exquisite embroidery, and offered to stitch a peacock for me as her way of thanking me for the linens. This stunning peacock worked on silk arrived today. I am absolutely blown away - it is one of the most gorgeous embroidered items I have ever seen - and to think it was done just for me! As usual I was so impatient to photograph this and post it to my blog, I didn't iron it first. And the photo doesn't show the real depth of colour, but you can still see how utterly fantastic it is. Thank you very much again, Lakshmi!

That's what it felt like when I collected my mail yesterday! One of the packets was from Robyn, a lady who I got to know through eBay. Whenever she comes across embroidered peacocks, she lets me know first, before putting them up for sale on the internet - isn't that kind of her? A couple of weeks ago, she emailed me to say she'd found these, as well as a framed tapestry. Well, the tapestry would have cost a heap to post from Queensland to Melbourne, as well as the price of it alone, so I reluctantly declined that one. But I did want the rest, so once she'd received my payment, Robyn mailed them down.

This is a pink pillowcase with a machine embroidered peacock.

I took this photo in the kitchen under fluro. light, so the colour is awful. The nice thing about this doiley is that it is the same pattern as a small tablecloth in my collection.

This design must have been on a transfer, or a very popular stamped linen item for Semco, as I have several variations of it - doilies, traycloths and now a cushion cover. It is fascinating to see the different colours used by each stitcher.

I've had these for a while, but hadn't got around to posting a photo because they were too hard to photograph. I had to find a dark background, and when I re-discovered them tonight while searching for something else, I had a brainwave - thrown them on the floor - the carpet is dark enough! The lady who sold me these, has an eBay site, and she knows how much I love Peacocks, so she emails me whenever she finds something I might like. She contacted me tonight about some new finds, and it reminded me that I hadn't posted a photo here of her last sale to me. If you are reading this Robyn - thanks again for keeping me in mind!

A few years ago, I bought a cross stitch magazine which had a freebie included with it, of a peacock bookmark. I've been working on it ever since - bit by bit - but last week I decided I wanted it out of my UFO cupboard, so I've been working on it all week, and now it is done. I'm not going to make it into a bookmark - it's far too pretty! Instead, I'll add a border and put it into a small frame.

I've had a few people drop into my other blogs and ask if I'd closed this blog because nothing had been posted for so long. No, I haven't closed it - I just haven't found any more embroidered peacocks! Until last week, and I found this little cushion cover at Savers Thrift Store. I think it should have cost $2.99, but there was no price tag, and the girl at the register was in a rush because there was a queue behind me, so she just glanced at it and said "Oh, fifty cents".

This arrived from the USA today (eBay purchase). If you've been reading this blog since it's inception, you will have read the following words before, so I apologise if I'm sounding like a broken record! This embroidery has to be the most beautiful and perfectly stitched peacock I've ever seen. It is on a large piece of fine material that is big enough to make a cushion cover of it, but I won't be doing that. I'd rather frame it, but as I have so many other things I'd like to get framed one day, I'm going to run out of wall space!

These two doilies arrived from the USA last week. You've heard/read it here before, but this will be the last lot of embroidered peacocks I buy for a while. I have an enormous collection, and I'm finding that most of what I see on eBay now is a duplicate or very similar to what I already have, or a design that is so way out it doesn't appeal to me. As well as that, after our trip away this week, I'll need to reign in my spending (again) for a while. The only exception to all this is if I find something really special in an opshop in Darwin, and I think that is highly unlikely!

Now for something different. My friend Val had a very busy blog for a year or so, but got a bit 'blogged down', so she has discontinued her blog activities for a while. But we have stayed in touch, and sometimes meet up for a coffee at the library, or go for a walk and picnic on a nice day. One of Val's many hobbies is paper-making and other paper-related crafts. Last week she presented me with this little notebook she'd made just for me, cutting a peacock motif from pretty paper and sticking it on the front. Inside is a blank pad and pencil. What a beaut gift! I love notepads - I've got several, and they all have a separate purpose.

Arrived from the USA today. This is a real beauty, with the same design at each end of the runner, but in partially varying colours. In pristine condition, beautifully stitched, and hand crocheted around the edge.

I don't know if it is just a coincidence, or if my husband has a photographic memory, but he was right about the peacock design on the runner I've just received. I do have another one very similar! But the other is on a pillowcase, and the colours are slightly different, so I still feel justified in keeping both.

I have two more peacocks on the way - another table runner which looks superb on the eBay photo! And a set of four napkins or doilies, which match a tablecloth I bought last year from a different seller. Watch this space!!

This arrived yesterday. Ken remarked "It looks the same as all the others you've got". Well, peacocks look like peacocks, of course, but I guess he doesn't appreciate the subtle differences between embroidered designs and the real thing. However, I must admit even to me they are starting to look similar. I think it's about time I took the whole lot out of storage, laid them all out on the floor and made sure they are all different!

Gosh, I didn't realise it had been so long since I posted any photos here! I think I'd better do a stock take of my peacock embroideries; I'm sure I had more than this since last October.
In the meantime, these two arrived today from the USA via eBay:

This is what Americans call a scarf, although whether or not they mean a head scarf is unclear to me. It could also be a table centrepiece, or a cushion cover...whatever it was supposed to be, it is in very good condition.

This is a fairly large table runner; quite old I think, but in pretty good condition, apart from some dye run where it has been washed inappropriately. One of our Guild members has advised me on how to fix that, so I'll give it a go someday.

This is a pillowcase which I won on eBay from a lady in Australia, but I don't know if it was actually made here, or imported from the USA at some stage. Machine embroidered, as you can see, but such a lovely and unusual colour scheme, it had to join my others!

Nobody can imagine how excited I was to win this auction. A few years ago, a similar cloth was listed on eBay, and I bid for it along with many other people. I was unsuccessful that time, and very disappointed, as I didn't think I would see another one like it again. So I was delighted to see this appear two weeks ago, and I was determined not to miss out on it! I placed a ridiculously high bid on it and sure enough, I won the cloth at a price way below my maximum bid!

Ken said "they don't look like peacocks", so I had to try to explain that an artist's impression of something is not always a photographic image; they have what is called artistic licence...he still didn't get it!

The eBay seller claimed this was the loveliest embroidery she had seen for a long time. I agree 100% - the traditional test (to look at the back) came up trumps - almost as good on the back as on the front.

Yet another pair of fabulous pillowcases arrived from the USA today! I'm always wondering why it is that most of the embroidered peacock linens originate over there? There are one or two items now and then, that surface in Australia. I'm not including the beautiful embroideries that are done in China, Japan, India, etc. because as much as I admire them, I have to draw the line somewhere in my collecting, so I tend to specialise in what might be termed 'English-style' embroidery. Just as long as you realise I'm not being a racist when it comes to my collection!!

I sometimes wonder why people choose to embroider on a strong colour like this blue; don't you think it would look much nicer on white or ecru? The stitching is nicely done, so I was happy to win this little item from the USA on eBay, regardless of the blue cloth!

If you are going to stitch a peacock in cross stitch, you should be a lot more careful than the person who did this! (hope she's not reading this). It may have been done by a young girl who hasn't been taught properly, or perhaps someone whose eyesight isn't the best, and they haven't noticed that half the stitches are in the opposite direction to the rest. Sorry if you think I sound too critical, but if you are building a collection of items, naturally you only want good stuff in your collection. I'll keep it, but it won't be on show when I'm out and about!

This is one end of a large table runner, and I have two of them, from the USA via eBay. The stitching is colourful, but it has been done using six strands of floss, which means the end result isn't as fine as it would have been if two or three strands had been used.

This panel is one of a pair of identical cross stitch panels I bought on eBay from the USA recently. It is only the second example that have of a peacock in cross stitch, and I am impressed!

This is part of a table runner (or scarf as the Americans call them). The design is unfortunately too big for my scanner, but I wanted to include at least part of it here. The stitching is absolutely incredible. I think it is called Swedish Weaving - on a material similar to Huckabuck, and the stitches don't show in full on the reverse.

Peacock in cross stitch - my first! This is one corner of a suppercloth that I discovered in an opshop today, for $6!! I hardly ever go in this shop because it is in a 'trendy' area and usually too expensive for my liking. But this cloth must have missed the eagle eye of the lady who does the pricing!

A pillowcase with a difference: the flowers are painted on, not stitched! The eBay seller mentioned this on her auction, and wondered if it was meant to be like that, or if it was actually unfinished. I have looked closely at it, and cannot see any transfer marks under the stitching or the painted area, so perhaps the whole design was printed on the material in colour originally, and someone just decided to embellish the peacock!

Yes, this is very pretty...I love the proportions of the peacock and fence with garlands on it. I just thought to myself last night...why am I not making and embroidering my own pillowcases??? Victoria catalog has such pretty ones for sale at a pretty penny you can be sure and the edges are just a sewn scallop and very lovely.

This doiley is the centrepiece of a duchess set, but I don't have the matching small doilies. It was embroidered in these colours when I bought it, and I'll always wonder if the stitcher followed a pattern or used her imagination with the colours? My unfinished version is below.

A year or so after I obtained the doiley pictured above, this one turned up on eBay, complete with matching doilies. One of the small doilies had been completed, but not the other, nor had this large one been started. There was no instructions provided, so I decided to do my own thing and use colours which matched a real peacock as closely as I could. Ken said tonight "why didn't you use some of your sparkly threads for the eyes?" If I'd had Pam's metallic threads when I started working on this, I would certainly had used them! But I ain't gonna pull all that stitching out now!

If you look closely, this doily is almost the same as the one I posted a few days ago. This is one end of a centrepiece I have had for a while, and didn't realise how similar it was to the other one until I took them out to compare tonight. The colours are different, and the tail on this one is longer than the other doiley.
